Keeping cool

Its been annoyingly hot lately at work. Our office lacks air conditioning so its been a nightmare, and even my poor servers are starting to feel the strain. Had to shut one Aeon on Monday morning to give it a well deserved break. Nyx and Hel picked up the slack to let it cool down for a day. (Ah, the power of virtualization!)

Temperatures at home in my flat have been very cool though. Lifehacker had a load of useful posts on how to survive the heat lately and one of them worked well for me. During the day, you keep the curtains and windows closed to keep the hot air out, while during the night you open all of your windows and let the cool air in.

However I have taken this a step further, as I am on the top floor of my building there is plenty of cool air and wind in the evening but sometimes the wind stops, so I had to rig a way to keep the cool air pumping in so enough cool air is in to last the whole day.

During the night I rig a fan up as shown in the picture, when the sun has set and air outside is cooler. I recommend people give it a try, works well for me.

The chairs actually were not stable, so I did move my coffee table next to them to hold them in place so my fan would not fall out of the window, as it would have been a very noisy four story drop! Not sure this is rain proof either…

Desire vs Nexus One

As my T-Mobile G1 (Dream) contract finally comes to an end at the end of this month, I have to decide what handset I should upgrade to. There are two main smartphones that I am interested in, the HTC Desire and the Google Nexus One. Choosing is tough.

From a technical standpoint, the Desire and N1 are almost identical. They are probably the most powerful and feature rich handsets available on the market in the UK at present. Both being made by HTC, what is different?

Perks of the Nexus One

  • Noise cancelling microphone
  • Voice to text functions

Perks of the Desire

  • HTC Sense UI
  • Improved battery performance
  • Working FM radio
  • Slightly more memory
  • Optical trackball

For most users looking at this, it becomes clear that the HTC Desire is probably best.

However… I am a two year old HTC Dream user being accustomed to Android 1.6 UI. Perhaps I am a Android purest, but I really don’t like HTC Sense. So I am not sure I would like using the phone with such.

As for the Battery, seeing as both handsets have exactly the same CPU, Screen and Battery it has to just be optimisations that HTC did, which I can probably do myself. Regarding the memory of the Desire… I can only guess it has a little extra for the HTC Sense UI?

Both are great handsets to be honest, but I am learning towards the Nexus One. Not the right choice for many, but probably best for me. Just have to wait until the end of the month until I can get my new toy… :(

Enjoying the big tournament

Almost everyone I know is watching the tournament this weekend, and I have to admit while I don’t pay too much attention when it comes around… This time is certainly organised and done really well.

The way its streamed over the internet in various qualities at no extra cost to the viewers, from high definition to lower qualities for people with slower internet is quite professional. Not only that, but they even got into the habit of uploading each match onto YouTube in high quality a day after.

Its unlike anything else really, and to think players from all over the world come together to play against each other, regardless of time zones is quite professional considering its just a game.

Commentators have been good this year too, even having a little fun. Like in between a few games, taking time to commentate on some completely random stuff for lols. Video below…

What? You guys thought I was talking about the World Cup? Pfft, no one watches that crap these days, its like a hundred years old now. For those who don’t know Eve Online, first of all, where have you been living? Secondly, Jita 4-4 is the main trade hub in Eve Online with an average of 1000 players coming and going with trade goods to buy or sell.

The actual tournament itself looks something like this: Link to Random Match

Anyway, as this weekend is the finals… Best get back to it.

Migration to WordPress

Having finally decided to stop being lazy with my website, I took Rhin’s advise and went over to the WordPress website to have a look at what there CMS offers in the hope it might make blogging more enjoyable for me again.

Even for the non-technical people who don’t have there own servers, I can see why they create and blog on wordpress.com now if its the same software. Then again, I have not used Blogger for perhaps five years, so maybe Blogger is similar too now?

Anyway, the issue I had was that with Drupal, whenever I wanted to do some rich text editing or including of images or videos in my posts it would not really work with the theme so I would have to upload images manually and then link them in image tags. :-\

Furthermore, I must have had 20 or so modules or addons installed so that I could do everything I wanted to do with Drupal, which made things overly complicated. Not to mention the annoying update procedures, and annoying cron that did not work. The website was barely working, so about time I started fresh with something easier.

So far, I have been very pleased with WordPress. The native image, video, gallery and rich text formatting support has been great and the default theme is good enough for me. Actually, the image support is epic, some of the best I have ever seen…

Browsing Android Market, I also noticed that there is a WordPress App! Quite frankly, its perfectly done too, spot on what I wanted. There website is here, but basically I can moderate comments, take photos and blog about them all from the handset.

As I am hoping to get the Nexus One later this month, I think I shall enjoy this change. Well, Nexus One or HTC Desire… Its a tough call, but I think I am getting to a choice by the time my contract ends and I can upgrade. Only 12 days to go!

Widcombe Rising

Widcombe Rising street party was on Sunday 13th June 2010 to celebrate the 200th anniversay of the Kennet & Avon Canal. Not much to say, attached photos are nice though.
